Hey everyone, it’s Lizzie here today! I wanted to talk about musicals. Not surprisingly, one of mama’s favorite musicals is Cats. For those of you that have never seen it, it is based on poet T.S. Eliot’s book “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats”. It’s a collection of poems about all different kinds of cats, and most of the songs in the musical use the same verses.
Mama uses the categories from this to describe the cats in her life. They are as follows:
Mr. Mistoffelees: he’s the kitty that hides a lot and you only get mysterious hints that he’s there. That’s Connor and I–we run under the bed when people come over!
Bustopher Jones: he’s the well fed guy who likes to eat and sleep. That’s aunty Cherie’s cat, Felix. (Felix is currently on a diet and is slimming down, so no worries!)
Macavity: the playboy who loves to play poker–definitely Aunty Cherie’s other kitty, Oscar. He’s a sweet reformed Tom cat who loves the ladies.
The Old Gumbie Cat: She’s the matronly kitty who teaches manners to the kittens. This was mama’s first kitty, Squeakie. We’ll tell that story at a later time.
The Rum Tum Tugger: This was Queen Lily, speaking her mind and wreaking havoc. And mama had no say in the matter.
Other kitties in the musical are:
Skimbleshanks, the kitty who thinks he runs the railway.
Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer, the twins who cause trouble but no one knows which one did it because they look identical and act so innnocent.
Grizabella, the female outside kitty who’s seen better days; she was someone’s pet at one time, but now lives on the street (this is what the song “Memory” is about)
Old Deuteronomy, the venerable old grandfather kitty that everyone loves.
The Rumpus Cat, another outdoor kitty who takes on dogs.
The musical includes a description of the Jellicle Ball (cats howling at the moon), and even a dance number that depicts kitties have a cat fit. The updated version also has cats making fun of dogs. It’s a fun and fuzzy musical that mama loves to play during the holidays. You can check out samples at Amazon.com.
In the spirit of Billy Sweetfeets, we have a musical post today.
It seems that mama can’t sit on a plane for four hours without some kind of music, so she has loaded up her Ipod with a ton of CDs. Because today is St. Patrick’s Day, she got into an Irish Jig mood and put all Celtic music on it. The Chieftains, Altan, Celtic Woman, and The Dubliners are all on there now. If you’ve never heard real Irish fiddle music, here is a sample:
This one is called “The Dublin Reels” by the Chieftains and even features dancing! We’re so proud to be Irish today!
In other news, it’s sunny and warm out and windows are open! We’re possibly getting the Feather Channel today!
This coming Sunday will be mama and her sister’s traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner, with homemade soda bread. We’ll definitely have pictures of that!
Have a good Wednesday!
